Raw Fuel

Massive loaders feed raw coal into the Tomato-Atsuma Power Station of Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan. The loaders are approximately 300 feet long. "To convey a sense of scale, the yellow specks near the middle loader is about the size of a car," Your Shot photographer Chris McCann explains. To put it into perspective, he says, "This power plant produces enough energy a year to power 800,000 average sized American homes per year, and also produces 10,000,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year."
