Event-o-Rama: 5 Must-Dos in October
There are some amazing events on tap all over the world, all the time. Here’s a taste of what you can see and do in October:
- For the last half century, thousands of spectators have been drawn to the river that separates Boston and Cambridge to witness the world’s largest rowing competition—the Head of the Charles Regatta (October 18-19). In addition to the usual fanfare (a rowing expo, exhibition tent, and plenty of eats) surrounding the two-day event, a 50th anniversary gala will be held to fête this classic New England sporting tradition.
- Experience India’s most dynamic Hindu festival, Diwali (October 23-27), in the shadow of the Taj Mahal. See the ancient city of Agra bathed in the glow of thousands of candles and oil lamps arranged in elaborate folk art patterns during the city’s distinctive take on the five-day “Festival of Lights,” which celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Still not sold? There’s a reason the festival made Traveler‘s Best Fall Trips list this year.
- Hungry for something new? The annual Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival (October 30-November 30) is sure to satisfy your every craving (and inspire new ones). The month-long gastronomical extravaganza (yes, you read that right) serves up world-class food and wine, live music, street carnivals, and more—all
against the
backdropof the spectacular Hong Kong skyline.
In 1868, Maria Ann Smith (aka Granny Smith) experienced a happy accident, unintentionally growing the first batch of little green apples that bear her name. Today, her legacy is honored at the annual Granny Smith Festival (October 18) in Sydney (well, technically Eastwood, a suburb 10 miles north of the city) where revelers enjoy live entertainment, a parade, and, of course, plenty of tart goodies.
- The Saffron Rose Fiesta is back (October 25-27) in Consuegra, Spain, to celebrate the floral spice that gives paella its iconic hue. The festival, held every fall 40 miles south of Toledo, boasts a harvesting competition to see who can separate the saffron from the flower the fastest, folk dancing, and traditional culinary treats, all of which make the fiesta a showcase for the region’s unique culture.
