an ocelot in Manú National Park, Peru

On the Prowl

A camera trap caught this ocelot on a nighttime prowl. Ocelots weigh up to 33 pounds; their diet includes rodents, lizards, sloths—as well as the chickens of farmer Elias Machipango Shuverireni, who is one of the indigenous people who live inside Peru’s Manú National Park. Still, he says he admires the cats’ beauty. Buy a print of this photo.
