Your Shot photographer Tracy Desiderio photographed a surfer catching a wave in Honolua Bay, Hawaii just as her shadow cast on the surface of the water.

One of the most humbling experiences as a photo editor is when a photograph forces you to pause and take a second look. This might happen while looking through a photographer’s whole take on assignment, or in my case, the daily uploads of the Your Shot community. Photos that make me pause could be anything from an unexpected underwater photo exhibit to a carefully layered and timed picture made on the street. Thanks to the breadth of creativity in the Your Shot photo community, I was captivated by both of these images this week.

Viktor Lyagushkin’s photo of his underwater photo exhibition, “Until the Ice Melts,” completely stunned me. I have never seen anything like that in my life and was immediately drawn in by the mysterious mood of the environment. Can you even imagine going underwater to see photos on display? While it looks like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I was able to experience it secondhand through the Your Shot community.

Tamara Krautkramer photographed a street in Mexico City by using an ornate, hot pink formal dress to draw the eye in and explore around the photograph. After a second of looking at the dress, you notice a person across the street wearing a shirt that reads “love pink”—and all of the elements of an everyday moment comes together in one brilliantly timed street scene.

Photos that make the audience stop in their tracks strike a balance between technical ability and crafting a visual narrative that tells the entire story in one moment. I’m grateful to look at photographs every day, and to find the moments that make me pause, ponder, and explore that still moment for a second longer.

Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas looks at daily uploads from Your Shot, starting each day by sifting through thousands of photographs. This series is a selection of her favorites from the past week.
