Grow an indoor herb garden
It's easy—and healthy—to grow fresh stuff at home.
Make food taste even better and help the environment by planting an herb garden at home. You’ll spice up meals and cut back on the pollution released into the atmosphere when trucks transport food over long distances. So go green by putting your green thumb to work with help from the Nat Geo Kids Cookbook by Barton Seaver.
Step 1
Remove the can labels and wash and dry the empty cans. Ask a parent to help you use sandpaper to carefully smooth any rough edges inside the open cans.
Step 2
Cut enough scrap paper or wrapping paper to fit around the outside of the cans and glue it in place. Decorate the paper with stickers, markers, or ribbons.
Step 3
Place a layer of small stones or marbles in the bottom of the cans for drainage. Add potting soil until the cans are ¾ full, then pat down the soil.
Step 4
Gently press a few seeds into the dirt and cover them with soil. Lightly water the seeds, and put your herb containers in a sunny spot.
Step 5
Attach labels to wooden craft sticks and position them in the cans. Your herbs should sprout within 7 to 10 days!
